William Hinton was a blacksmith from Kangaroo Valley in Brisbane. When he enlisted in January 1915 he was first posted to 3rd Battalion however was transferred to 4 Battalion a week later. William deserted in February 1915 and a warrant was issued for his arrest He embarked in October 1915 and arrived in France via Egypt in June 1916. During this time he transferred to 13th Battalion and then the 45th Battalion.

On or about 24 July 1916 he suffered gunshots wound to his left leg and foot whilst in action on the western front in the actions before Pozieres. In late August his lower leg was amputated.  He was granted his discharge in England in June 1918 as he was no longer fit for military service and he had gained civilian employment as an Australian Munitions Worker.
