Bernard Scrymgour McKENZIE was born on 26th July, 1881 in Brompton, South Australia

His parents were John McKENZIE and Ann LYNCH

He had already served for 3 and a half years in the South Australian Infantry Regiment (SAIR) before he enlisted in Petersburgh on 29th June, 1915 - he embarked with the 6th reinforcements on 27th October 1915 on the HMAT Hawkes Bay from Adelaide

Bernard died on 20th January 1918 in Belar, Palestine after being shot by a fellow soldier who had been affected by alcohol - he is buried in the Deir el Belah War Cemetery in Palestine

He was awarded the 1915-15 Star, British War Medal & the Victory Medal

Obituary from Trove

Private B. S. McKenzie 

Mr. & Mrs. J. A. McKenzie of Peterborough have been informed that their third son, Private B. S. (Barney) McKenzie , died of wounds at Jerusalem.  Private McKenzie enlisted with the 11th Light Horse on June 29, 1915 and sailed for Egypt on October 27th.  He was stationed there all the while and has been with the troops in their victorious march through Palestine.  He had not been reported sick or wounded previously.

He was 36 years of age and previous to his enlistment was employed at the loco sheds as a fitter and turner.  He was a member of the Druids Lodge

Mr. & Mrs. McKenzie had two other sons at the front, Frank, who was one of the first to enlist from Peterborough, has returned and is at the Keswick Hospital - the other son Alick is in hospital in England, suffering from wounds inflicted 18 months ago

Details of these two brothers enlistment and service numbers have not yet been found - Alick may be John Alexander McKENZIE who was born in 1885
