Son of William Oates and Alice Oates of Ballengarra, Wilson River, NSW.

Ronald Mervyn Oates who was killed in action on 25 February 1917 while serving with the 35th Battalion and is buried in the Boulogne Eastern Cemetery. Plot V111, Row B, Grave 175; Clifford William Oates who was killed in action on 21 July 1917 while serving with the 35th Battalion and has no known grave. His name appears on Menin Gate, Ypres, Panel 25.

Commenced return to Australia on 6 May 1919 aboard HS Karoola as wounded disembarking on 28 June 1919
