Francis Kates was the son of Emily Elizabeth Kates, of Junee, New South Wales and the late William Kates who had passed away in 1909 when Francis was about 11 years of age.

His older brother 2867 Pte. William Henry Kates 18th Battalion AIF was awarded a Distinguished Conduct Medal for gallantry at Westhoek in Belgium.

Another older brother 1932 Corporal Arthur Stanley Kates served with the 55th Battalion AIF.

After training on Lewis Guns in England Francis was sent to the Western Front in November 1917. He joined the 34th Battalion on 21 November 1917 and was killed in action only six days later.
