Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Cornelius Donoghue was the son of Michael and Mary Donoghue of Minjary, near Tumut, New South Wales. His mother died in 1915 aged 72 years after she was accidently burnt and his father, who was an old pioneer of the Tumut-Adelong district, died of a stroke during January 1917, at 80 years of age. The father is mentioned on page 70 of Donoghue’s service file. Cornelius married Eileen Delaney in Hillston, New South Wales during 1913.

Cornelius’ younger brother, 2397 Pte. Thomas Donoghue 55th Battalion AIF, died of sickness, gastro, on 7 May 1917, only three days after Cornelius died of wounds inflicted at Bullecourt.

Cornelius joined the 19th Battalion in France on 18 December 1916. He suffered severe shrapnel wounds during the second battle of Bullecourt on 3 May 1917 and died in the 3rd Casualty Clearing Station the next day.

According to his service file, Cornelius’ wife, Eileen, and a son, Leslie Donoghue, were both awarded a pension.
