Son of Christoff Friedrich Uhlman and Margaret Uhlmann nee Gibson of Burpengarry, QLD. Brother of John Reginald Uhlman who returned to Australia on 20 February 1919 having served with the 41st Battalion.

Commenced return to Australia on 15 January 1919 aboard HT City of Exeter disembarking on 2 March 1919 at Melbourne for onward travel to Brisbane arriving there on 8 March 1919.

On 5 January 1922 David married Rachel Agnes Graham in QLD
