Served twelve months as a plumbing apprentice with j. Boyd of Pyrmont, NSW.

On 3 August 1918 Thomas married Florence Bessie Pear Pownell in the Church of Christ Warminster, Wiltshire, England. Vicar James S. Stuart officiated
