Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Second of three brothers who served in WWI, Private Noel Stephen Winter (Service No:1894) enlisted in the AIF at Northam on 6 March 1915, and was attached to 16th Infantry Battalion on 19 April 1915 when he embarked with his Unit from Fremantle for the Middle East on board HMAT A8 Argyllshire. Private Winter was WiA (shrapnel wounds to his back) at the Dardanelles (Gallipoli Peninsula) on 2 July 1915, and then later hospitalised again with Enteric Fever. Private Winter embarked from Suez for Melbourne on 9 February 1916 on board HT Nester, and was attached to 16th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 14 August 1916.

Noel was born in Launceston, Tasmania in 1897, second of four children of Charles Gideon Winter (b1865 in Pembrokeshire, Wales) and Mary Ada (aka Ada) Sleightholm (b1871 in Launceston, Tasmania). Charles immigrated with his parents and siblings in 1871, arriving in Melbourne on board the Stonehouse, and living in Warrnambool before moving to Tasmania. Charles worked in Patersonia, Launceston as a Bookseller and Farmer, and Ada was a School Mistress at Patersonia State School when they married in 1893. Charles and Ada joined Charles' younger brother in Johannesburg, South Africa in the late 1890s - according to his Obituary (Trove; 1950) the move was for Charles to 'pursue business interests and fight in the Boer War'. Following the birth in 1906 of youngest child and only daughter Frances, Charles and Ada returned to Australia with their family and settled in Western Australia. Charles was a Farmer and Orchardist in Kellerberrin and Cookernup, and Clerk in Perth before serving in the AIF (Corporal; Service No:7588). In the 1920s Charles and Ada lived in Cookernup, where Charles was a Farmer and Orchardist, before settling in Busselton in the 1930s - Charles worked for the Agricultural Bank as Supervisor with the Group Settlement Scheme.

Noel worked in Kellerberrin as a Farm Labourer and Farmer before enlisting in the AIF in 1915. Following his Discharge, Noel was a Miller in Perth, where in 1926 he married Vera Bainbridge Henson (b1895 in Midland, Western Australia) - Vera worked in Perth as a Dressmaker. Noel and Vera settled in Fremantle (Balkatta, Cottesloe, Palmyra), where they raised their family and Noel was a Miller/Millwright. Noel died in 1970 and Vera in 1978.
