"For continuous and consistent gallantry and devotion to duty. As Regimental Sergeant-Major he was throughout the period under revies, shown an untiring energy and complete disregard for his personal safety. During the fighting on 8/9th August 1916, at Villers-Bretonneux, at Peronne and at Bellicourt he took charge of all ration parties, and maintained the supply of S.A.A. and grenades in the face of heavy shell and machine gun fire, acorss open country, and by his example and fortitude he maintained the morale of his parties under most trying conditions."
