Son of Charles Gray Unwin and Rose Hannah Unwin nee Pavitt of Devon, England.
Husband of May Alice Unwin of Union Street, South Melbourne. Charles and May married during 1911c in Victoria.
27 March 1916 - enlisted at Melbourne with the 7th Battalion and with the rank of Private.
23 March 1917 - transferred to the 65th Battalion
4 December 1917 - transferred to the 7th Battalion
19 January 1918 - wounded. Shrapnel wound to the right thigh . Embarked HS St. Denis on 24 January 1918 for England.
Returned to Australia on 8 April 1918 aboard HT Dunluce Castle
29 June 1918 - discharged at the 3rd Military District as wounded
