Biography

"Mr. and Mrs. Cannon, of 83 Little Ryrie Street, have received the following letter concerning the death of their son, Gunner B H. Cannon: —

"France, Saturday, 18th November. It is with the deepest regret that we, the members of the 16th Battery Staff, express our sympathy in your recent sad bereavement of your son Bernard, who was killed in action on Tuesday, November 14th. He had been with us since the battery was formed over 12 months ago, and always did his duty as a good soldier. Bernard was well liked by all who knew him, and will be greatly missed in the battery. Again offering our deepest sympathy to all the family, we are, yours sincerely — Cpl. Dempsey, Gunners I. McSweeney, E. Champion, C. F. J. Morris, I. Harrington, R. C. Bishop, F. C. Richmond Porter, L. J. Gutteridge, S. Williams, T. S. Richardson, C. J. Flynn, and J. A. J. Morris."

Gnr. Cannon's mate, Saddler-Sgt. J. F. Thomas, also wrote: —

"I had many opportunities of judging of the sterling qualities of your son. I found him at all times devoted to his duty and quite fearless of any danger; he was, in fact, known amongst his comrades as one of the pluckiest and the best of mates. I pray that God will tend you comfort in the knowledge that he did his duty always, and died a hero's death. We join you in mourning his loss for we know we have lost one of the best."

Gnr. Cannon was for some time in the A.I.F., and stationed on the railways at Queenscliff for about 18 months." - from the South Gippsland Shire Echo 02 Feb 1918 (nla.gov.au)

"IN MEMORIAL.

CANNON.— In loving memory of our dear brother, Gunner Bernard Cannon, killed in action at Flers, France, 14th November, 1916. R.I.P.

A hero, who will ever be
His country's joy and pride,
He shouldered his gun in honor's cause,
And in the battle died.
He fought, and for Australia lasting glory won,
And tho' so sore at heart, we say,
0 Lord, Thy will be done. — Inserted by his sorrowing brother and sister-in-law, J. and F. Cannon.

CANNON.— A tribute to the memory of Gunner Bernard Cannon, 16th Battery, 6th F.A.B., killed in action, "Somewhere in France," 14th November, 1916. R.I.P. — E.A.M." - from the Geelong Advertiser 14 Nov 1918 (nla.gov.au)
