When an enemy shell exploded alongside the party, kiling the patient, 2 bearers, and wounding 4 others, his coolness, courage and resource was beyond praise; he dressed the wounded, and secured their immediate removal to Headquarters. Finding that the R.A.P. had moved forward without leaving directions he placed his men in safety and went out under Machine Gun and heavy shell fire and located the 60th Battalion R.A.P. after much difficulty and being hit three times by pieces of shell. He then went back to his men, led them up, and was the means of evacuating wounded who had been lying there for 35 hours.
