Walter was born in Sydney, Australia in 1893. He enlisted in the Army on 27 September 1915. After initial training he was assigned to the 20th Australian Infantry Battalion. He sailed from Australia for the middle-east on 17 December 1915 arriving in Alexandria, Egypt on 1 February 1916. On 24 April he joined the 5th Training Battalion for preparation for the trenches in France. On 9 May 1916 he was finally sent to France and joined the 20th Infantry Battalion in the field.
Walter remained in the trenches until 3 October 1916 when he received a severe gunshot wound in the scalp. The wound was serious and he was evacuated to England for treatment and recuperation. He traveled back to France to rejoin his battalion on 14 June 1917. On 8 April 1918 he was again wounded. This time it was a gunshot to the left hand. It was severe enough to force him to be evacuated to England for treatment. He didn’t return to his unit until 23 November 1918.
He returned to Australia on 27 January 1919. He was discharged upon arrival in Australia.
