John Robert Gunnyon was born in Stawell Victoria in 1899. He was a grocery packer and Presbyterian. He listed previous experience with Cadets. John enlisted twice. The first time, he was given service number 6825 with the 28th Battalion, served 4½ months and was discharged because of illness. His father, James Walter Gunnyon died on the 23.7.1916 in Fremantle and his mother was Martha Jane Gunnyon of 17 Barnett St, Fremantle. He reenlisted aged 19 years 4 months at the AIF Depot, Blackboy Hill on the 13.8.17. John is described as being 5 feet 9½ inches tall, with a chest measurement of 34½ -36½ inches, medium complexion, hazel eyes and dark brown hair.
John's brother Walter (‘Wally’) Gunnyon is also listed at Scots Church. Their sister Esther Alice Gunnyon married Harold Talbot Day, and Edith Jane Gunnyon married Oliver Ploughman Harris, also on the board.
John re-enlisted several months later in Perth and was posted as Private Service number 4433 to the 12/2 Pioneers. John embarked on HMAT Aeneas A60, in Melbourne on the 30.10.17. He was transferred to the 32nd Battalion at Sutton Veny in England on the 2.1.18. On the 1.4.18 he was sent to France and transferred to the 48th Infantry Battalion. John returned to Australia on the 12.7.19 per City of Exeter. He disembarked on the 16.8.19 and was discharged on the 16.9.19. In 1940 he and his wife Kathleen were involved in a car accident in which she was taken to hospital with possible spinal injuries, and he was thrown from the car, receiving minor head injuries. He died in Melville on the 1.3.1968 aged 68 and is memorialised at the Fremantle Garden of Remembrance Crematorium C, site 0056.
