Son of John Ellis Tonkin and Margaret Jane Tonkin (nee McCabe) of Barton Street, Kurri Kurri, NSW. Brother of 445 Private Richard Caleb Tonkin who was killed in action on 19 August 1915 at Gallipoli while serving with the 13th Battalion and has no known grave.
