“I Once was Lost, but Now am Found”.
Stephen and younger brother Sapper Thomas Aloysius Doyle (Reg No-5727, 1st Australian Tunnelling Company, born 1893, died 1931), were resting together in an unmarked grave, forgotten, so December 2014 and September 2016 I placed crosses adorned with poppies in remembrance of their service for God, King and Country.
Served in The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
90 years ago today, on the Tuesday afternoon of the 3rd June 1930, Private Stephen Joseph Doyle, 45th Battalion, fitter's assistant and carpenter from 95 Bull Street, Cooks Hill, New South Wales and 11 Little Edward Street, Merewether, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 47. Born at Cooks Hill, New South Wales on the 17th August 1882 to Patrick and Elizabeth (Eliza) Ann Doyle nee Nolan of 70 Bruce Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W., Stephen enlisted December 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W., but was rejected due to deformed toes.

Reenlisted January 1917 at Sydney, N.S.W., Mr Doyle returned home July 1918 as medically unfit, suffering from asthma and bronchitis.

His name has been inscribed on the St. Mary's-Marist Bros' School (Newcastle) Honour Roll.
I submitted applications for Commonwealth War Graves Plaques, curbing and marble chip January 2019, and these were accepted February 2019. Completed July 2019.

The tragic story of a once Forgotten Digger of The Great War now resting peacefully at Sandgate Cemetery.
Sapper Thomas Aloysious Doyle (also known as Paddy), 1st Australian Tunnelling Company (Reg No-5727). Tragically, on the 30th August 1931, Thomas took his own life.

Resting with Paddy is older brother Stephen Joseph (Reg No-3372, 45th Battalion, born 1882) who died 14 months previous on the 1st June 1930, age 47, and I believe the grief of this loss, and being unemployed, was too much for Thomas to bare.
