Served during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
71 years ago today, on the Thursday afternoon of the 1st March 1951, Gunner John Wilfred (Woolford?) Gallantry, 9th Australian Field Artillery Brigade (Reg No-21222), marine fireman and caretaker (Newcastle City Fruit Markets), from Margaret Street, Brisbane, Queensland and Wirths Park Rest Home, Melbourne, VIC and 155 Hunter Street, Wickham, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 62. CATHOLIC 2-53. 12.
Born at Bootle, Liverpool, England about 1889 to Joseph and Margaret Rose Gallantry of 145 Knowsley Road, Bootle, Liverpool, England; husband of Mary Gallantry nee Benson (married 1926, Hamilton, N.S.W., died 1956, sleeping here, name not inscribed on headstone plaque), John enlisted January 1916 at Brisbane, Queensland.
Admitted to hospital 15.7.1917 (dermatitis), 9.9.1917 (psoriasis - an autoimmune disease that appears on the skin).
John returned home December 1917, being discharged on the 14th February 1918.
Mr. Gallantry’s name has been inscribed on The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name possibly inscribed on a Queensland War Memorial or Roll of Honour.
John’s gravesite plaque proudly tells us of his service with the 1st A.I.F., and I have placed poppies in remembrance of his sacrifice for God, King & Country.
Contact with descendants would be greatly appreciated.
Lest We Forget.
