Biography contributed by Adelaide Botanic High School

Frederick “William” Halliwell, who enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) as a Private, was born on 22 May 1878 in the Parish of Wigan, Lancashire, England. His father, William Halliwell, lived at Larches Cottages, Greenhill, Wigan. While details of Frederick’s formal education remain unclear, it is evident that he applied his knowledge and skills effectively throughout his career, particularly in his role as a Foreman Carpenter with John Johnson & Son Builders before his military service. He worked at the business for nearly 15 years before immigrating to Adelaide, South Australia. Halliwell enlisted in the AIF at the age of 38 years and 3 months

Halliwell embarked on 19 September 1916 from Sydney, New South Wales, aboard the HMAT Commonwealth as a member of the 5th Pioneer Battalion. The ship sailed to Devonport arriving 14th November 1916. Halliwell proceeded to France 31st December 1916 and was taken on strength with the 5th Pioneer Battalion 7th September 1917.

He survived the war and applied for discharge in the UK wishing to remain there having secured work with his former employer.
