73 years ago today, on the Wednesday afternoon of the 17th October 1951, Private Henry Frederick Cantrell, 4th Australian Division Traffic Detachment (Reg No-6898), boilermaker from Burlington Street, East Brisbane, Queensland and Wansbeck Valley Road, Cardiff, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 62. ANGLICAN 3-185. 47.

Born at Brisbane, Queensland on the 6th February 1890 to Frederick Henry, died 18.10.1939, Brisbane, Queensland, age 90, no inscription on headstone, and Frances Sophia Jane Cantrell nee Woodward, died 24.7.1921, Brisbane, Queensland, age 64; husband of Eileen Cantrell nee Manwaring, married 1921, Murrumburrah, N.S.W., remarried 1953 to John Finley Cantrell, Molong, N.S.W., died 19.10.1994, Cardiff, N.S.W., age 91, Henry enlisted on the 17th May 1917 with the 26th & 15th Battalions at Brisbane, Queensland.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A20 Hororata on the 14th June 1917.

Admitted to hospital 14.7.1918 (bronchitis, severe).

Invalided to England 25.7.1918.

Commenced return to Australia 3.5.1919.

Henry arrived home on the 21st June 1919, being discharged medically unfit on the 23rd July 1919.

Mr. Cantrell’s name has been inscribed on the Coorparoo State School Honour Roll, East Brisbane War Memorial and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at Henry’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Plot XXV Row H Grave 9, memorialised at parent's gravesite -
