Henry was the fourth of eight children of Henry Griffiths Snr (born 1853 in Launceston, Tasmania) and Louisa (Lucy) Elliott (born 1854 at Hobart Town in Tasmania). Henry Snr was the son of Captain Griffiths, who traded between the Eastern States of Australia, New Guinea and New Zealand. Henry Snr 'followed the sea for fifteen years' before marrying Lucy in 1884 at Emu Bay in Tasmania. Henry Snr and Lucy raised their family in Emu Bay and Wynyard, where Henry Snr was a Labourer.
Henry, a Labourer, enlisted in the AIF in January 1915, serving as a Private (Service No:1830)with the Anzac Ploice and 12 Infantry Battalion 14th Reinforcements. Henry was KIA at Ypres on 3 November 1917.
