Died on this date – 12th February…… William McNaughton was born in Brisbane, Queensland on 13th October, 1886. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 6th July, 1918 as a 31 year old, single, Dental Mechanic from Redcliffe, Queensland.
William McNaughton stated on his Attestation Papers that he had completed 2 years Home Service with A.A.M.C. (Australian Army Medical Corps) & had left to enlist in Active Service abroad. He was posted to A.M.C. (Army Medical Corp) – Dental on 6th July, 1918.
Staff Sergeant William McNaughton, Service Number 19000, embarked from Sydney, NSW on HMAT Borda (A30) on 17th July, 1918 with the Dental Details & disembarked at London, England on 27th September, 1918.
He was marched in to A.A.M.C. (Australian Army Medical Corp) Training Depot at Fovant, Wiltshire, England on 27th September, 1918.
Staff Sergeant McNaughton was marched in to No. 1 Command Depot at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire from Fovant & Classified as A3 (fit for Active Service).
On 27th January, 1919 Staff Sergeant McNaughton was admitted to 1st Australian Dermatological Hospital, Bulford, Wiltshire with VD42. He was discharged on 29th January, 1919 to Convalescent Training Depot. Total V.D. period – 3 days.
He reported ill to Hospital at Parkhouse on 5th February, 1919 then transferred & admitted to Military Hospital, Tidworth on 9th February, 1919 with Pneumonia. He was reported as dangerously ill.
Staff Sergeant William McNaughton died at 07.50 on 12th February, 1919 at Military Hospital, Tidworth, Wiltshire, England from Broncho Pneumonia. (The Statement of Service form & Report of death of a Soldier by the Registrar, Military Hospital, Tidworth both recorded he died from Influenza, Pneumonia.)
He was buried in Grey Friars Churchyard, Stirling, Stirlingshire, Scotland in a family grave & is included on the Family Private Headstone.
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission now records that Staff Sergeant William McNaughton is buried in Mar’s Wark Cemetery, Stirling, Stirlingshire, Scotland. His death is still acknowledged by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

William's parents were William McNaughton and Jessie Jardine who lived at Jetty View, Redcliffe. At the time of his enlistment in July 1918 William was a dental mechanic. He died of illness at Tidworth, England, in February 1919 and was interred privately in Grey Friars Churchyard, Stirling, by relatives residing in Stirlingshire.
