105 years ago today, on the 21st June 1918, Corporal George Matich, 3rd Battalion (Reg No-4519), coal miner from McMichael Street, Maryville, New South Wales, Died of Wounds at the 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station (GSW chest, left hand & nose), Strazeele, near Armentieres, France, age 31.
Not married, fiancee Vera Hestelow.
No Australian Red Cross Wounded and Missing File.
Born at Sydney, New South Wales on the 29th October 1886 to Natal (Natila, Nathaniel, died 1.3.1902, Newcastle, N.S.W., age?) of Broadmeadow, N.S.W. and Bridget Matich (died 5.11.1941, Wickham, N.S.W., age?) of 48 Lindsay Street, Hamilton, New South Wales and 34 Elizabeth Street, Tighes Hill, N.S.W., George enlisted on the 6th September 1915 at West Maitland, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board RMS Osterley on the 15th January 1916.
Wounded in action - 18.8.1916 (shell shock & contusion), 3.5.1917 (GSW back, mild), 20.6.1918 (GSW chest, left hand & nose).
On leave to Paris from 15.2.1918 to 24.2.1918.
George is resting at Longuenesse (St Omer) Souvenir Cemetery, France. Plot 5 Row B Grave 77.

Mr. Matich’s name has been inscribed on the St. Mary's-Marist Bros' School (Newcastle) Honour Roll, Hamilton Sacred Heart Branch, No. 356 Hibernian Roll of Honor, Greta War Memorial, Branxton RSL Memorial Hall and Honour Rolls, Branxton World War 1 Memorial and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
I have placed poppies at the memorialised Matich gravesite in remembrance of George’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. CATHOLIC 1-M Com. 36.
Memorial inscription incorrectly states KILLED IN ACTION.
