Fourth son of Mrs. Charlotte Hopkins (nee Booth) of Cheltenham, and the late J. R. Hopkins, of Port
Pirie. He was born in Port Pirie on June 23, 1895 and educated at the Pirie West School. Entered employment as a porter with the South Australian Railways on 7 November 1911 (Archives SA) at Port Adelaide and Woodville before his enlistment.
Gunner Hopkins enlisted in September 15, 1915, sailed from Melbourne on May 29, 1916, and was in France for over three years up till the time of his death. He had leave in March 1917 when he visited friends and relatives in Scotland and Plymouth. His brother-in-law, Private Alfred William Williams S/N764 also made the supreme sacrifice on 28 June, 1917.
