Biography contributed by Robert Wight

Albert Theodore Eberhard, aged almost 34, enlisted in the AIF on 21 February 1916. He embarked overseas on 18 July 1916 and arrived in England on 9 September 1916. He departed England and arrived in France on 30 November 1916, where he joined the 51st Battalion on 7 January 1917.

He saw his first major action during the German withdrawal to the Hindenburg Line in April 1917, and then again at the Battle of Messines in early June 1917.

The Germans launched their Spring Offensive in March 1918 and the 51st Battalion took part in the successful defence of the Dernancourt region on 5 April 1918. Later the same month, the battalion also participated in the famous Australian counterattack at Villers-Bretonneux on the night of 25 – 26 April 1918.

He was wounded on 10 June 1918, when the 51st Battalion provided support for an Australian attack at Morlancourt, and evacuated to hospital in England, where he remained until he embarked for Australia on 18 January 1918.

He arrived in Melbourne on 10 March 1919, where he was discharged from the AIF as medically unfit, due to his wounds, on 14 May 1919.
