Driver John Frederick Crook (Service No:21841) enlisted in the AIF on 5 September 1914 and was a Gunner attached to 3 Field Artillery Brigade when he embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT Geelong A2 on 17 September 1914. Gunner Crook was in France when he transferred to 1st Divisional Ammunition Column as a Driver in May 1915, and at Montaubau in France in January 1917 he was helping get mules out of a shell hole when he lacerated his foot - and was evacuated to hospital in England. Driver Crook embarked for Australia on 31 October 1917 on board HT Berrima A35 and was Discharged on 15 February 1918.

The eldest of nine children, John was born at Riddell's Creek in 1886 to John Emanuel Crook (b1860 in Bacchus Marsh, Victoria) and Rose (Rosa) Frolich (b1863 in Landsborough, Victoria). John Snr (a Dairy Farmer) and Rose married in 1887 and settled at Carrum in Melbourne Victoria where they raised their family and John Snr was a Dairy Farmer.

John worked as a Dairy Farmer at Carrum until the 1920s, and in 1923 in Melbourne married Lillian Gladys Beryl Weston (b1899 in Melbourne, Victoria). John and Lillian settled in Melbourne where they raised their family and John worked as a Cooper. John died in 1975 and Lillian in 1983.
