76 years ago today, on the Wednesday afternoon of the 5th September 1945, Private Charles Bice, 24th Battalion (Reg No-6168), hospital attendant from Henry Road, Morisset, New South Wales, father of five, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 53. ANGLICAN 3-170. 52.

Born at St Columb Major, United Kingdom (March 1892), baptised 21.4.1892, to Richard Row Veal and Frances Elizabeth Bice nee Rowe; husband of Helen Hodgson Bice nee Butler (married 1922, Newcastle, N.S.W., died 1961), Charles enlisted May 1916 at Sydney, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 8.11.1917 (bronchitis), 30.6.1919 (cellulitis of the knee), Charles returned home November 1919, being discharged on the 9th January 1920.

Nothing located on Trove regarding enlistment or returning home.

Mr. Bice’s name has been inscribed on the Morisset Mental Hospital Honour Roll (photo, unveiled on the 19th September 1920, 29 names inscribed, 2 Fallen).
I have placed poppies at Charles’s gravesite in remembrance of his service for God, King and Country.

Older brother James Veale (M.M., 13th Battalion, Reg No-2790, born 1890, died 1972, St Leonards, N.S.W., age 82) also served 1st A.I.F.
Two sons served 2nd A.I.F.
