Birth record not found but it is believed he was born in February 1882 at Plaistow, East London which then was in the county of Essex. Sources which state he was born in Sydney, New South Wales [AIF Project] and findagrave - Memorial 56082047- stating he was born at Plaistow in the Chichester district of West Sussex, England are not correct,
He was 32 and left a widow, Mrs Lilian Hawkins, "Atholdene" Cromwell Road, Whistable, Kent, England
Previous military service- Served for 5 years in the Royal Naval Reserve.

He was trading down to Port Moresby in the S.S. Morinea, Burns Phillip Line from Sydney and on his offering his service to the A.I.F. the Captain of the Ship cause a very nice Roll of Honour to be placed in the ships cabin. It was 2.6 years in the service before "Orient" & "P & O Lines".
