102 years ago today, on the 20th October 1917, Private John James Mulhearn, 54th Battalion, labourer from 12 Webster Street, Hamilton, New South Wales, father of four, fell at the 1st Battle of Passchendaele, age 33 years, 10 months.

Born at Wickham, New South Wales on the 29th January 1884 as MULLHEARN to Andrew (died 1929) and Mary (died 1903) Mulhearn of 20 Murray Street, Hamilton, N.S.W.; husband of Selina May Mulhearn nee Morgan (married 1908, died 1968 as LEIGH, ANGLICAN 2-141. 78.) of 34 John Street, Tighes Hill, New South Wales, John enlisted October 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Admitted to hospital 19.8.1917, trench fever, John’s name has been inscribed on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial (Panel 29), Belgium.

John’s name has also been inscribed on the Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial (photos, unveiled on the 20th May 1922), Hamilton Superior Public School Roll of Honor and the Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor. Name not inscribed on the Wickham Superior Public School Roll of Honour.
Unfortunately, there is no memorial inscription on his parent’s headstone, so I have placed a memorial cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the memorialised grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service. CATHOLIC 1-M Com. 116.

106 years ago today, on the 20th October 1917, Private John James Mulhearn, 54th Battalion (Reg No-3156), labourer from 12 Webster Street, Hamilton, New South Wales, father of four (Clarence Dudley - buried at the cemetery, ANGLICAN 2-141. 78, Charles Henry, Bertie Harrington, Mary Jane), was Killed in Action by an enemy artillery shell during the 1st Battle of Passchendaele, Passchendaele Campaign, Belgium, age 29.

Born at Wickham, New South Wales on the 29th January 1884 as MULLHEARN to Andrew (died 11.11.1929, Hamilton, N.S.W., age 83) of 20 Murray Street, Hamilton, N.S.W. and 31 Porcher Street, Hamilton East, N.S.W., and Mary Mulhearn (died 10.2.1903, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 43) of Charlton Street, Newcastle West, N.S.W.; husband of Selina May Mulhearn nee Morgan (married 1908, Hamilton, N.S.W., remarried to Archibald S Leigh, 1919, Wickham, N.S.W., died 12.12.1968, age 77, sleeping at ANGLICAN 2-141. 78) of Broadmeadow, New South Wales and 34 John Street, Tighes Hill, N.S.W., John enlisted on the 3rd October 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A29 Suevic on the 11th November 1916.
Admitted to hospital 19.8.1917 (trench fever).

No report located of John being KIA.

John’s name has been inscribed on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial (Panel 23), Belgium.

Place of Association - Hamilton, Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.

Mr. Mulhearn’s name has also been inscribed on the Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial, Hamilton Superior Public School Roll of Honor and the Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor. Name not inscribed on the Wickham Superior Public School Roll of Honour.

There is no memorial inscription on the headstone plaque for the Mulhearn family to tell us of the loss of their son during The Great War, so on the 20th October 2017 I erected a Memorial cross adorned with poppies in remembrance of John’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. CATHOLIC 1-M Com. 118.
