Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery, Newcastle

Private John Andrew Bainbridge, 53rd Battalion

102 years ago today, on the Friday evening of the 9th November 1917, the Young Wallsend Roll of Honour was unveiled to a large attendance at Smith’s Hall.

This magnificent WW1 Roll of honour, beautifully carved Queensland maple, was entrusted to Mr W Bennett of Wickham, at a cost of 36 pounds (about 3,300 dollars today).
21 names have been inscribed of citizens from the town who had enlisted and served in The Great War, 3 designated as paying the supreme sacrifice (not 4).

The headstone at his parent’s gravesite has been destroyed, so I have placed a memorial cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the memorialised grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.
