David Gelletly enlisted in the AIF during WW1, and embarked for France via England in mid May 1916. He arrived in France on 13 January 1917 and served there until June 1919.

During his time in France he contracted Trench Fever and was hospitalised for six weeks in May-June 1918. David returned to Australia in August 1919.

During WW2 David served in the 19th (VIC) Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps (VDC).
