Frederick Down enlisted at age 42, although he declared himslef to be 40. He declared himself to be single at the time, listing his mother Mrs Mary Jane Down as Next of Kin. Fred was allocated to the 6th Reinforcement draft for the 27th Battalion joining it in the Middle East just prior to embarkation for Marseilles and its arrival on the Western Front. He was admitted to 3 Australian General Hospital in February 1916, with influenza. He would likely have rotated through "The Nursery Sector" around Armentieres between April. The 19th July opned the Australian account on the Western Front at Fromelles follwed just a few days latter by the 1 Division assault on Pozieres. On the 4th August the 27th Battalion took part in the 2 Division attack that wrested the Windmill feature from the Germans and it was most likely on the course of this that Fred was wounded receiving a gunshot would to his left arm. This saw him evacuated eventually to the UK. ON return from hospital he was assigned to the 7th Australian Machine Gun Company
