Brothers: 2746 Pte Alfred Charles MITCHELL, 59th Bn, killed in action the same day 19 July 1916; 414 Pte William MITCHELL, 8th Light Horse Regiment, killed in action, 7 August 1915.

Sydney was age 23 when killed, also a saw mill hand from Gippsland Victoria. A soldier who came over with him on the Ulysses, 2717 Pte. J.B.McCormick C Company 58th Bn, stated that he saw Sydney’s body lying in No Man’s Land, half way between the German and Australian lines.

Sydney Mitchell was posted missing, 19 July 1916.

Over 13 months later he was found by a Court of Enquiry, held in the field, 29 August 1917, to be 'Killed in Action, 19 July 1916'
