Alexander Stewart Frew, a natural born Briton was born in April of 1892, in Petersham, Sydney. His parents were his mother Mary Hopston Frew and his father George Frew.

When Alexander become old enough to attend a school, he enrolled at a public school in Wollongong, New South Wales. He later became a grocer to support his family as he was not married and did not bear any children.

Alexander enlisted into the Australian Imperial Force as a private on the 25th of July 1915 at the age of 23 and 3 months. He began to train as a soldier to fight in Louveval, France and embarked aboard the HMAT A69 Warilda from Sydney on the 8th of October the same year. He was assigned to the fourth Battalion on the 21st of January but transferred to the 56th Battalion on the 16th of February.

In less than 2 months, he was reported sick on the 6th of April, suffering a fever of unknown origin. He returned back into the same Battalion 9 days after on the 15th. He then received shrapnel to his face, right arm, and both legs on the 20th of July 1916, arriving at the 30th General Hospital in Calais, France the following day. He was discharged from the hospital on the 23rd July and was granted furlough on the 27th of September, returning to combat in Wareham on the 27th of October.
