Norman was the eldest of three children of Robert William Atkinson (b1866 in Spdalla, Victoria) and Georgina Paterson (b1870 in Melbourne, Victoria). Robert and Georgina married in 1890 in Melbourne, Victoria and settled in Doreen, Whittlesea in Corio Victoria where they raised their family and Robert was a Storekeeper. In 1918 the family moved to Melbourne, where Robert was a Farmer.

In 1916 Norman was a Storeman at Fairfield in Melbourne when he enlisted in the AIF. He served (Private, Lance Corporal; Service No:1205) with 39th Infantry battalion and was WiA in France in 1917 (GSW to wrist, jaw and thigh). Norman was Discharged in 1919.

Returning to Melbourne, Norman was a Driver in 1923 when he married Olive Vera Woolcock (b1896 in Melbourne, Victoria). Norman and Olive settled in Melbourne, where Norman worked as a Driver until the 1920s, when he became a Motor Assembler.

Norman died in 1960 and Olive in 1992.
