CHARLIE KILNER SHEARD was born on 9th October, 1891, at Burnie, Tasmania, the son of Mr. Charles Kilner Sheard and Mrs. Annie Eliza Sheard. He was educated at the Wangaratta Grammar School, Victoria, and joined the service of the Bank at Narrandera on 24th June, 1910. On 8th May, 1912, he was transferred to Mudgee as ledger-keeper; and to Trundle, as teller, on 18th September, 1914.

Charlie Sheard enlisted as a private in the A.I.F. on 9th August, 1915, and later on joined the 49th Battalion, 13th Infantry Brigade. He saw active service in Egypt from November, 1915, to June, 1916, in France, until the end of October, 1918, and then in England until 23rd August, 1919. While in France in October, 1916, he was promoted to second lieutenant and to lieutenant on 1st January, 1917.
