Pte 843 Walter Leslie Plummer was killed in action during the 1st Division's successful assault on Chuignes, following the Amiens offensive.
One eye witness report stated:
“During the advance on 23 August 1918 Private Plummer was firing a Lewis machine gun at the enemy when he was wounded in the face by a machine gun bullet. His wound was bandaged and, accompanied by Number 3490 Private Wallace JS, who was unwounded, he set out for the Dressing Station.
On the way out Private Wallace was fatally killed by the shell that killed Private Plummer.
Private Plummer was found lying dead near Herleville (15 kms south west of Peronne) by Corporal Prior of the Australian Corps Heavy Trench Mortar Battery”.
