Died on this date – 13th January.... Private Denis George Maloney was born near Hammond, South Australia in 1893. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 6th April, 1916 as a 23 year, married, Labourer from South Broken Hill, NSW.

Private Denis George Maloney embarked from Adelaide on HMAT Afric (A19) on 9th June, 1916 with 43rd Infantry Battalion, 1st Reinforcements & disembarked at Southampton, England on 24th July, 1916.

Private Maloney was sent to Group Clearing Hospital at Codford on 23rd October, 1916 then transferred to Military Hospital, Sutton Veny on 24th October, 1916 with Bronchitis. He was discharged on 1st November, 1916 & joined the 43rd Battalion Reinforcements on 12th November, 1916.

Private Maloney proceeded overseas to France from Southampton on 25th November, 1916. He was admitted to Hospital on 8th December, 1916 mumps & transferred to 7th General Hospital at St. Omer on 9th December, 1916. He was discharged to Base details at St. Omer on 29th December, 1916 & rejoined his Unit in the Field on 30th December, 1916.

[A birth was registered in the district of Clare, South Australia in 1916 (26th December) for Reginald George James Maloney son of Dennis George Maloney & Veronica Melrose Maloney (nee Dugan). A death was registered for Reginald George James Maloney in 1917 (around 13 January, 1917).]

Private Maloney was wounded on action on 31st July, 1917. He was invalided to England on Hospital Ship Carisbrook Castle on 12th August, 1917 & admitted to University War Hospital at Southampton on 14th August, 1917 with a gunshot wound to head - severe (Rifle bullet). Private Maloney was discharged to furlo on 1st October & was then to report to No. 1 Command Depot at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire.

Private Maloney was admitted to 1st Australian Dermatological Hospital at Bulford on 24th October, 1917 with VD & discharged on 6th December, 1917 to Convalescent at Parkhouse where he was discharged on 13th December, 1917.

[If anyone has an issue with me mentioning VD – I am sorry that you are small minded. I believe that VD is relevant to the story & affected a lot of these soldiers & as a result their immune systems were compromised & when they contracted illnesses like Influenza, bronchitis or pneumonia – their bodies could not fight it & they died. This has happened so many times in the 1,400 Australian Soldiers I have researched.]

Private Denis George Maloney was admitted to the Military Hospital at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire on 2nd January, 1918 with Bronchitis – seriously ill.
Private Denis George Maloney died on 13th January, 1918 at the Military Hospital, Sutton Veny of Tubercle of Lung (Generalised Tuberculosis).
