During WW1, Claude served with the AIF at Gallipoli.

He embarked from Melbourne on 22 December 1914; a shell shattered his right hand at Gallipoli on 19 May 1915; he was admitted to hospital in Cairo on 28 May 1915; he was evacuated from Suez on 15 August 1915; and he arrived back in Melbourne on 9 September 1915
