Son of Richard Oakman and Elizabeth Oakman nee Aldridge of Wall Street, North Wagga Wagga, NSW later of Redfern, NSW.

Brother of Herbert Oakman who returned to Australia on 22 December 1918 having served with the 54th Battalion.

Comenced return to Australia on 31 May 1919 aboard HT Aeneas disembarking on 12 July 1919 at Melbourne for onward travel to Sydney
