Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

George served on Gallipoli from September 1915 when the 26th Battalion was first sent there. He later fought in France for two years.

His brother, 338 Pte. Bert Henry Baker, 15th Battalion AIF, died of wounds 4 July 1918, aged 24. They were the sons of George and Jane Baker, of Mathinna, Tasmania.

Just after the war it was determined that the Mathinna State School had 126 former students who had gone to the war. Of these 18 had been killed, 61wounded; 17 wounded seriously and returned. The population of Mathinna today is roughly 140 people.
