Gunner Reynoldson was killed by a shell in Noreuil Valley, just near Bullecourt. His death and burial are well documented in the Red Cross Files, including the decorating of his grave with artillery shells. However it was subsequently lost and he has no known grave.
Cobram Courier 17 May 1917.
Word came to the Rev. J. A. Lee, who was in Cobram last Saturday night, of the death in action in France of Private Leonard Reynoldson, one of the two soldier sons of Mrs and the late Mr L. Reynoldson, of. Strathmerton, and the rev. gentleman conveyed the sad news to the sorrowing family on Sunday morning. The whole of Strathmerton now mourns the loss of one of its best and brightest young men, and those in neighbouring districts who in pre-war days were Leonard's opponents on the football field freely admit that ho always played a manly, honourable game.
Numurkah Leader 15 June 1917. In Memoriam Service at Strathmerton.
The memorial service to the late Gunner L. Reynoldson (who fell in France on April 20th) was held in the Methodist Church on Sunday afternoon …... ‘There was one charm that stood out in Len, and that was his quiet, unassuming, courteous and gentle manner. There was none of the so-called ‘Australian bluff' about him, although this bluff was "true" after all, for it had made our soldiers the bravest in the world, and the "crack" regiments of the German army had fallen and yielded before the Australians at Bullecourt. Len was one of nature's gentlemen, and bore nature's white flower of a blameless life. He had endeared himself to his companions, and nobody had ever heard or said a word against him. Such a testimony as this one could not buy, and had Len been spared he would have made a noble man and splendid citizen. It was not love of adventure that had prompted him to volunteer, but the call of duty, "Greater love hath no man, than lay down his life for his friends." As a member of the rifle and football clubs, and later the Light Horse, Len, was, very enthusiastic, but he little thought at the time that he was training for a more strenuous game. On the football field he played the clean game as a man, and no finer epitaph could be given than this. Len went into camp, and when death called his father away he returned home, and for some months the call came louder and louder, and eventually he volunteered again…..’
