Biography contributed by Modbury High School

There were many who fought proudly in World War One and one of them was William Ernest Pyne Marles. He was born on the 17th of December 1884, in London England, and he arrived in Australia in 1911 aged 26 with his occupation at the time listed as a Carpenter.

Marles enlisted in the 43rd Infantry Battalion on the 5th of March 1917. His records state his age as being 30 years and 3 months however, Marles was at least 32 at the time. Assigned the rank of Private and with the service number 3097, at this stage Marles was living in Keith, South Australia and his occupation was listed as Traveller. He listed a local, Mrs Bain, as his next of kin on his enlistment form.

Marles embarked on the 23rd of June 1917 on the HMAT Borda in Adelaide. His group of reinforcements for the 43rd Infantry Battalion took a group photo just before embarkment. On the 4th of July 1918, at the Battle of Hamel, Marles was severely wounded in the left arm. This led to his arm being amputated. He returned to Australia late in 1918 and was finally discharged on the 31st of October 1920.

After the war, Marles was married to Margery Johanna Knutsen and they had a son together. Margery died in 1926 and later, Marles remarried to Doris May Bird who was also from England. They had two children and continued to live in Adelaide. Marles died on the 5th of October 1954 during a trip to Wentworth in New South Wales. At that stage he lived at Blackwood in South Australia. Marles is buried in the Centennial Park Cemetery, along with his wife, Doris.
