Robert Livingstone Conning BLACK was born in 1893 in Ascot Vale, Melbourne, Victoria to Thomas Montgomery BLACK and Margaret Helen ROGERS

He was with the 7th Infantry Battalion, 16th Reinforcements who embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Themistocles on 29th July, 1916

Robert was Killed in Action on 9th August, 1918 at Hurlevillle, France - he was first buried in the Copse Corner British cemetery and later reinterred at Heath Cemetery in Harbonnieres in France. His name is memorialised at the Australian War Memorial

He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal

Three of his brothers also served in WW1 - Douglas Bruce BLACk (SN64799 ) who died of illness in 1918, Donald Caldwell BLACK (SN 7302 & Wallace Moncrief BLACk (SN7451) - Donald & Wallace both returned to Australia in 1919 - whilst the 3 brothers were fighting overseas the family farm was being run by another brother Thomas Fergus BLACK
