Biography contributed by Trinity College

Lionel Adams was a married man living in suburban South Australia when he enlisted.  He was married to Beatrice.

He was a part of the 43rd Battalion, 7th reinforcements.

He had previously served 2 years in East Surrey, England, as a rifleman but was discharged because of vision issues.

Adams enlisted for the war on May 16th 1916, finally embarking on the 23rd of June 1917 on the ship HMAT Borda A30.

The ship stopped at Cape Town en route to the front.

Adams was admitted to hospital in Cape Town.

Going A.W.L, he failed to re-embark from Cape Town on the 27th of July 1917.

Deserting an army in action is a very foolish move and Adams was found two months after this string of incidents, wearing civilian clothes.

Finally, after officially being recognised as a deserter by a Court of Inquiry in August, Adams was struck off the AIF list as from 5 October 1917.

It is not known what happened to him following this, however, his records include letters from the Red Cross on behalf of his wife, Beatrice, enquiring after his whereabouts.
