Leslie Francis Essex was born on 26 April 1897 in Fremantle, Western Australia, to William Joseph Essex (1866-1912) and Mary Jane Halliday (1868-1944). He left on the ship the "Uganda" from Fremantle on 20 August 1916 and sailed to Southampton, England. From there he went to Havre and into battle with the 5/51st Battalion of the AIF.

Leslie's cousin Leonard George Crabbe(19904) was also Killed in Action in Ploegsteert, Belgium, on 25 June 1917.
