Archibald ABBOTT, son of Sylvester and Jane ABBOTT, was born in Aldbury, Hertfordshire, England. He went to the Moat Road Council School in Leicester. He had previous military experience serving in the Territorial Force, Leicester, England. Archibald was a farmer before he travelled to Australia when he was 17.
Abbott enlisted in Armidale, New South Wales, Australia on 22 September 1915. He served as a Private in the 1st Light Horse Regiment. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT RMS Osterley on 15 January 1916.
He was transferred to 4th Division Artillery, and posted to 10th Field Artillery Brigade, 12 April 1916. He served as a gunner in the 10th Field Artillery Brigade. The 10th Field Artillery Brigade formed in Egypt in early 1916 to support the newly raised 4th division. It went on to serve in Egypt to defend the western front. He proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 8 June 1916, then disembarked Marseilles, 13 June 1916. He was then transferred to 37th Battery on 19th June 1916.
Abbott was admitted to Field Ambulance, 1st July 1917 for a twisted ankle. Transferred to 55th General Hospital, Boulogne, 1 July 1917; to 7th Convalescent Depot, 6 July 1917; to Australian General Base Depot, Rouelles, 14 July 1917; re-joined unit, 26 July 1917. Abbott was found guilty on the 5th of November 1917 of being absent without leave while on active service. He was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
He was killed in action at age 22 on 20th April 1918 in Albert, France. Archibald was buried in the Frechencourt Communal Cemetery row B, grave 17.
