Son of Joseph Upchurch and Jane Upchurch of Oatlands, Tasmania. Brother of Hyla Joseph Upchurch who returned to Australia on 1 September 1919 having served with the 14th Field Artillery Brigade.

At the time of enlistment he was residing in St. Kilda Road, Melbourne, Victoria

21 March 1916 - enlisted at Melbourne with the 38th Battalion and with the rank of Private.

5 September 1916 - transferred to the 6th Battalion

8 October 1916 - transferred to the 59th Battalion

24 March 1917 - wounded. Wound to the left thigh.

26 September 17 - wounded second occasion. Wound to the back pentrating the thorax
