Senior Constable Joseph Upchurhc, of Hamilton, formerly of Oatlands, has been officially infomred that his elder son, Private James William Upchurch, late 38th Battalion, A.I.F. (Victoria), died on November 30 at 2nd Australian Casualty Station, from gunshot wounds received in action in France some two months ago.

Son of Joseph Upchurch and Jane Upchurch of Oatlands, Tasmania. Brother of Hyla Joseph Upchurch who returned to Australia on 1 September 1919 having served with the 14th Field Artillery Brigade.
At the time of enlistment he was residing in St. Kilda Road, Melbourne, Victoria
21 March 1916 - enlisted at Melbourne with the 38th Battalion and with the rank of Private.
5 September 1916 - transferred to the 6th Battalion
8 October 1916 - transferred to the 59th Battalion
24 March 1917 - wounded. Wound to the left thigh.
26 September 17 - wounded second occasion. Wound to the back pentrating the thorax
