Private Alphonso John Dennis (Service No:4262) enlisted in the AIF on 15 January 1916, and was attached to 22nd Infantry Battalion on 7 March 1916 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Suez on board HMAT A18 Wiltshire. On 20 April 1916, Private Dennis transferred to 60th Infantry Battalion at Duntroon Plateau near the Suez Canal, and embarked from Alexandria for Marseilles on 29 June 1916 on board the Kinfauns Castle for service on the Western Front. Private Dennis was WiA in France (GSW foot) on 19 July 1917, and on 25 September 1918 was transferred to 59th Infantry Battalion. Private Dennis embarked from England for Melbourne on 15 May 1919, and was attached to 59th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 29 October 1919.
John was born in Eaglehawk, Bendigo, Victoria in 1886, eighth of nine children of William Frederick Dennis (b1850 in Cornwall, England) and Emma Louisa Davey (b1855 at Emerald Hill, Victoria). William immigrated in 1859, arriving in Melbourne with his parents and siblings on board the Royal Bride. William and Emma married in Eaglehawk in 1876, and lived there and in Nering via Ballarat, where they raised their family and William worked as a Blacksmith and Miner. William was working as a Miner at broken Hill in New South Wales when he died in 1896.
John was working in Melbourne as a Labourer in 1908 when he married Della Andrews (b1888 in Melbourne, Victoria). John and Della settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and John worked as a Labourer until his death in 1943. Della died in 1971.
