55 years ago today, on the 30th June 1970, Driver Joseph James Matheson, 5th Australian Divisional Train, Australian Army Service Corps (Reg No-2643), labourer from Nabiac, New South Wales and Yungaburra, North Queensland (1926) and Home Hill, Queensland (1939) and 177 Maitland Road, Tighes Hill, N.S.W. (1954) and Hamilton?, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 76. CATHOLIC 3-98. 162.
Not married.
Born at Nabiac, New South Wales on the 4th October 1893 to Thomas, died 10.6.1935, Taree, N.S.W., age 79, funeral notice states buried Dawson River Cemetery, no Find a Grave located, from Minimbah, N.S.W., and Eileen (Ellen) Matheson, died?, Joe enlisted on the 9th June 1915 with the 2nd Battalion at Liverpool, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A54 Runic on the 9th August 1915.
Admitted to hospital 22.10.1915 (mumps, slight).
Transferred to 54th Battalion 14.2.1916.
Granted leave to England from 5.9.1918 to 20.9.1918.
Transferred to 56th Battalion 11.10.1918.
Commenced return to Australia 7.4.1919.
Joe arrived home on the 25th May 1919, being discharged on the 18th July 1919.
Mr. Matheson’s name has been inscribed on the Coolongolook & District Honour Roll, Nabiac Wang Wauk Soldiers Memorial Church Honour Roll, Nabiac War Memorial and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
I have placed poppies at Joe’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Older brother William Patrick, born 5.12.1891, Nabiac, New South Wales, labourer or station hand from Nabiac, New South Wales, enlisted 9.6.1915, discharged medically unfit, defective teeth, re-enlisted 26.4.1916, discharged medically unfit for active service.
