Son of James McDonald Upfill and Ellen Mary Upfill of Leslie Street, Auburn, Victoria. Brother of James Anderson Upfill who returned to Australia on 3 April 1919 having served with the 2nd Field Ambulance.
26 November 1915 - enlisted at Melbourne with the 8th Light Horse Regiment and with the rank of Private.
7 August 1916 - transferred to the Camel Corps
16 September 1916 - transferred to the 29th Battalion with the letter 'A' added to his service number, now 2169A
7 May 1918 - wounded. Severe wound to the foot and invalided to England on 11 May 1918
14 October 1918 - transferred to the 6th Battalion
Commenced return to Australia on 6 September 1919 aboard HT Euripides disembarking on 20 October 1919
Medals: British War Medal, Victory Medal
2 August 1920 - discharged at the 3rd Military District
